Our college prep workshops take place weekly on Saturdays from 4-6pm. Our AP prep workshops will meet for an hour every other Saturday, so overall commitment will depend on how many subjects you are interested in working on.
Volunteers are not expected to attend every workshop, so overall commitment is flexible.
Our organization fully relies on our tutors being prepared and attending our workshops, and we suggest that volunteers come to workshop 1-3 times per month!
If you want volunteer but have concerns with scheduling and time commitment, feel free to join us at the General Meeting and speak to a director!
We request all tutors to take some time to thoroughly plan their lessons before volunteering at workshops. Tutors have several resources for this including:
General Meeting activities (learning teaching techniques and content-specific notes)
the Tutor Central website (viewing Group Profiles, downloading curriculum, etc.)
emails with detailed advice and instructions
a great team of Directors tasked to make the lesson planning process smooth for you
While every tutor is different, we have typically noticed that tutors spend about 1-2 hours planning their lessons sometime during the week before their planned class.
Come to General Meeting and/or email us! The Bruin Initiative is always looking for more volunteers and we are happy to have you join the team!
You can and you should! We accept all the help we can get and we are always excited to add some new talent to our team! Of course, the tutoring job can sound more daunting the more you think about of it, but we have a few measures in place to help you ease in to our organization!
Fall Quarter Training is especially designed for new tutors! See the associated question for more details.
Newcoming tutors will be able to use our Tutor Evaluations to better inform their own teaching. We are excited to see what you can do and we aim to provide strong, constructive feedback to help you.
Newcoming tutors always have the option of shadowing another tutor (rather than teaching individually) to get a better sense of how AP Prep Workshops work.
Newcoming tutros can also partner up with a more experienced tutor to ease into the process of our SAT Prep Workshops.
Give it a try! You know you wanna.
If any volunteer asks us to sign off on community service hours, we will gladly do so! It is up to the volunteer, however, to ensure that our organizations meets the guidelines of whatever program the volunteer is completing service hours for.
We know as much as you do.
