Bruin Initiative is a student-run volunteer organization at UCLA committed to helping underserved high school students from the surrounding Los Angeles Area pursue higher education. Our mission is to minimize disparities in educational resources by providing free supplementary classes for students who come from underserved communities.

We believe that all students who want to pursue learning at a higher institution have the right to do so. It is common knowledge that students who attend college are more likely to earn higher incomes later on in life. We hope that by providing more educational resources for students, we will motivate our students to go to college, pursue their passions, and ultimately bring success back to their communities. To achieve this goal, we focus on preparing our students in two ways.

First, we want them to understand what colleges are looking for in an application. Through our Summer College Prep Course, students will learn what makes a strong application. During our College Application Consultations, students will have the opportunity to strengthen their application with guidance from a current UCLA student. In these workshops, we advise students on approaching their application essays (or personal insight questions) and choosing relevant and unique topics. We also critique personal statements, revising them to the best of our ability.

Second, we hold AP Prep WorkshopsDuring our program, students will be provided with a guided curriculum including review materials and practice tests to aid in their studies. By performing well on their AP exams, students have the opportunity to skip introductory level classes and save thousands of dollars. Accepting AP credits varies by school, so please reach out a Bruin Initiative tutor for more personalized advice.
